Limitations of Basic WiFi Hotspots

Limitations of a simple WiFi hotspot

Wi-Fi access points can be purchased from most electrical appliance stores for residential or office use. They can't however provide all the services that a WiFi Hotspot requires:

  • No control, anyone can use the WiFi Hotspot for free
  • No login page to advertise and promote the business
  • All the bandwidth is consumed by greedy users
  • Business computers can be hacked and data stolen
  • Users download illegal files, with risk of a lawsuit
  • No parental controls to block undesirable websites

Free WiFi Hotspot

Many restaurants, bars, hotels and motels offer free wireless Internet for guests, or charge guests for the Internet service. Guests and travelers make reservations based on Internet availability because they have gadgets that use wireless Internet: iPhones®, iPod Touch®, laptop computers, and Blackberries®. Simple WiFi Hotspots can leave guests and travelers frustrated without providing benefits for the business.

No control, anyone can use the WiFi Hotspot for free

Internet access is not limited to guests and visitors, you will be providing Internet for the whole neighborhood. Access control is required to ensure only customers use the Internet.

No login page to advertise and promote the business

The Internet service you provide for guests and customers is also an advertising tool. A login page is a great opportunity to show specials and provide discount coupons to encourage guests and customers to return again.

All the bandwidth is consumed by greedy users

Access to the Internet via DSL or cable is a limited resource: it has a maximum data rate in Mbits. Bandwidth control is required to prevent a user who downloads a video making the service slow for everyone else.

Business computers can be hacked and data stolen

When the WiFi Hotspot and PoS or business computer are connected to one DSL or cable is is very easy for a hacker to steal credit card information from the PoS. PCI-DSS regulations require the Hotspot to use a second DSL or install a Firewall to protect the PoS.

Users download illegal files, with risk of a lawsuit

WiFi Hotspot users who have file sharing software install in their computers to download files illegally can be detected by organizations like the RIAA who are suing to stop illegal downloads. Some businesses offering a Hotspot service have already received a letter from their DSL or cable provider telling them their Internet service will be disconnected due to illegal activity.

No parental controls to block undesirable websites

All WiFi Hotspots require a parental control feature to block access to websites that should not be viewed in a public environment. This will ensure that the Hotspot provider does not receive complaints from angry guests or visitors who have seen other users viewing unpleasant material.
