Hotspot Payments with Credit Cards and PayPal™

The Guest Internet GIS-R4 Hotspot Gateway

The GIS-R4 Hotspot Gateway is a low cost, reliable and easy to install hotspot system for up to 100 users. The GIS-R4 is designed to sit between the DSL or Cable modem and a WiFi Access Point (WIFI AP). The GIS-R4 controls access to the Internet, challenging and validating users as they connect to the WiFi Hotspot network.

The GIS-R4 has an easy to use setup wizard (see demo) and login pages that can be fully customized with the Hotspot owner's logo or made to look like their web site. Hotspot guests can be allowed free Internet access by agreeing to a disclaimer or be billed for access using PayPal™ or a credit card.

Internet Hotspot usage with PayPal™

When a guest tries to connect to the Internet they are directed to the customized login page, the guest has the choice of:

• 1. Entering an existing login code
• 2. Click on Purchase token with PayPal™

The login page also displays the terms and conditions of the hotspot. The guest must agree to the terms to use the Internet.

If the guest selects PayPal™, he is presented with a list of prices and access times to choose from.

The guest is informed that PayPal™ and credit card payments can be made with or without a PayPal™ account.

Once the guest selects a price he is forwarded to the PayPal™ payment gateway. The gateway will allow a guest with a PayPal™ account to log in or ask for credit card and payment details.

At this point the transaction is secure (using SSL) and purely between the guest's browser and PayPal™'s servers. No personal or credit card data is handled by or stored on the GIS gateway.

If the transaction completes successfully, the guest is forwarded back to the gateway and a login code is provided together with a login button.

A copy of the code will be emailed to the guest and an email detailing the transaction sent to both the guest and hotspot owner.

PayPal™ billing and usage reports

Though no personal or billing data is stored on the GIS-R4, billing stats are collected so daily and ad-hoc reports can be generated showing income earned by the hotspot. The reports also show any billing problems including tokens which were purchased but not used.

Emails detailing live billing transactions are also delivered to the hotspot owner

The GIS-R4 also retains usage data so that reports can be generated showing hotspot usage over time.

PayPal™ and credit card billing setup

In order to set up PayPal™ and credit card billing a PayPal™ business account is required. The PayPal™ business account provides API credentials which are needed for the GIS-R4 to connect to PayPal™.

The GIS-R4 allows different prices and login times to be set up as well as customization of the messages displayed to the guest both in the browser and by email. Emails to the hotspot owner can also be customized.

Email must also be set up if you wish to receive reports and notifications.

Customizing the Hotspot login page

The WiFi Hotspot login page can be customized in 3 different ways:

• 1. Selecting from one of 12 built-in designs
• 2. Uploading an image with a logo or picture
• 3. Uploading a professionally designed login page

The built-in wizard is easy to use; simply select a picture, give the hotspot a name, some contact details and a message for the guests.

The login page can also be professionally designed using HTML/CSS or Flash. The custom design is often used to give the Hotspot login page the same appearance as the Hotspot owner's web site, reinforcing the brand and providing a familiar look and feel to guests.

Other pages can also be uploaded with the login page to create a browsable web site on the Hotspot. Pages containing restaurant menus, legal texts (terms/discalimers) or support information can easily be displayed to guests.

'Walled gardens' can be set up so the guest can browse web sites, including the owner's web site, before having to log in.
